2009 CALIFORNIA DRIED PLUM CROP ESTIMATE

Sacramento, CA (June 2, 2009) - The California Agricultural Statistics Service (CASS) announced a 2009 California dried plum crop estimate of 170,000 tons. This estimate would represent a 32% increase from the 2008 California crop reported by handlers to total 128,198 tons and would be 57% above the previous five year average of 108,096 tons.

The 2009 dried plum crop has experienced ideal weather conditions. Bloom was reported to be excellent, and growers have been busy thinning fruit due to the large set. The crop is reported to be of excellent quality, with good size.

CASS estimated bearing acreage to be unchanged from last year at 64,000 acres.

The year-end carryover will be up from last year’s 34,151 tons leaving adequate supplies to support industry shipment growth behind a communications campaign positioning California Dried Plums as a sensational superfruit due to their digestive health benefits and other nutritional attributes.
