Popular Snacks or Uses

"Nilgiri's Rich Almond Cake with California Prunes" are one of the most popular items sold throughout Indian stores during festive holidays. In a co-branded association, California Prunes were added as a healthier ingredient to the cakes and sold with packaging support by Nilgiri's.

During Christmas and New Year's, co-branded California Prune Cakes were promoted with one of the leading retail chain stores of South India, Nilgiri’s. The promotion was conducted at 50 Niligiri Stores and included prune samples, displays, distribution of a nutritional flyer and the sale of the Nilgiri and California Prune co-branded cakes.

Local Events

California Prunes partnered with a food critic to host an evening dining experience for likeminded foodies to engage in conversation during the popular Festival of Colors.

The food, color and conversation were presented on a pleasant evening, set on a lawn under a lovely Banyan tree near a historical monument in New Delhi.

Cultural or Historical Significance

Prunes are usually dark purple in color, oval, sweet and sticky, with a wrinkly and chewy skin. This dried fruit, known as Alu Bukhara (also spelt as Aloo Bukhara) in Indian cuisine, is included in Indian diets for its many health benefits. According to Indian tradition and culture, prunes have been a part of the Indian cooking traditions for years. Prunes are considered a seasonal fruit and have been added to traditonal Indian cooking--commonly in curries and purees--for several generations. In the past, prunes were dried directly under the sun for months and then used as a souring agent in curries.
